From the Principal
Hi Buker families,
The week began with a teacher workday on Monday. All the elementary teachers gathered at Winthrop. We spent the day digging deeper into CKLA, our new literacy curriculum. In the morning teachers looked at writing samples from each grade level to get a better sense of how writing skills develop from year to year. This gave them a sense of what skills students are coming with, how their instruction layers on top of this, and what will come in future years. In the afternoon, teachers chose from a number of literacy activities that support small group instruction so they can tailor their instruction to meet the specific needs of their class. It was great to get the whole district together to talk about literacy.
Tuesday’s storm led to an early release day. Thank you to everyone for being flexible with the dismissal change. Admittedly, the storm totals were not very high. But when the rain shifted to snow and roads started to get greasy right about the time we dismissed, it felt like we had made the right call.
On Wednesday I visited first grade as they were making fossils. They were pressing shells, leaves, and pine needles into clay to create their own fossil record. This was a part of their unit on The History of the Earth.
Next Thursday is our Spring Open House. We will be open from 5:30-7:00pm. Bring the family and come to see all the great things we’ve been up to. The fifth grade class of 2023 will be hosting a fundraiser that night. More information on that is below. Also, Friends of Buker will be selling Buker merchandise (shirts, hats, etc). You can pre-order at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080d4caaa922aa8-buker3#/
On Friday, we will have a Buker Spirit Day. We encourage everyone to wear something that shows off their love of Buker School!
Finally, we have started kindergarten registration for the fall. If you or anyone you know has a child planning to attend kindergarten this fall, please have them register as soon as possible. Registration information is below. Having an accurate count early helps us plan for the upcoming school year.
Have a great weekend!
-Ben

We continue to have a few open positions:
- Noon Monitor: 11:20-1:35 daily (a little earlier on Wednesdays) to help with one recess and three lunch seatings. You wouldn't be alone, we have other staff there too.
- Substitute Teachers: We are always looking for more subs. Even if you are only available one or two days a week, having additional substitute options always helps.
- Special Education Teaching Assistant: Work with students across the building under the direction of a Special Education Teacher.
If you have any questions about the positions, contact Ben. More information is on the district's Human Resources webpage.
